The product

Rust-Oleum 9100
High Build Swimming Pool Epoxy

9100 High Performance immersion epoxy is the best swimming pool epoxy coating. It has been applied in New Zealand for over 30 years and has proven to deliver the best long-term performance.

It is so much easier to apply, having a 1:1 mix ratio for partial mixing which reduces wastage significantly. It can be roll or spray applied with a pressure pot or an airless system. It requires no other primers and can be applied directly to prepared existing epoxy coatings, or directly to prepared concrete substrates.

A fantastic pool coating product.

  • The best long-term performance of any swimming pool epoxy coating in NZ
  • Simple 1:1 mix ratio — easier partial mixing and far less wastage
  • Roll or spray applied with a pressure pot or airless system
  • No separate primer required — direct to prepared concrete or existing epoxy
  • Trusted by DIY owners and professional pool painters since 1993

Application Recommendations

In accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. These recommendations are the foundation of the 30-year track record professional pool painters trust.

1

Kit size & mix ratio

9100 immersion epoxy is packaged in a 7.58 litre (12 kg) kit consisting of 2 x 3.79 litre US gallon tins — base and activator — with a 1:1 mix ratio for easier partial mixing and less wastage.

2

Coat schedule

Apply 3 roll coats 24 hours apart to achieve a minimum dry film thickness of 350 microns, or 2 spray coats to achieve 400 microns dry film thickness.

3

Remove incompatible coatings

Do not apply over existing chlorinated rubber or acrylic coatings. These must be completely removed by abrasive or high-pressure water blasting.

4

Prepare epoxy or fibreglass

Existing epoxy or fibreglass surfaces should be sanded with 40-grit abrasive using a pole sander to ensure a good mechanical key.

5

Moisture & weather

Ensure concrete, textured plaster or fibreglass surfaces are completely dry before application. Ensure rain is not imminent — high moisture will flatten the cured finish. Second and third coats must not be applied over dew or moisture or adhesion will fail.

6

Mixing & induction

Disperse all solids off the bottom of both the base and activator before combining. The mix ratio is 1:1 base/activator with no exceptions. Once mixed, allow 30 minutes induction with the 9102 activator, or 15 minutes with the 9104 activator, before applying by spray or roller.

7

Thinning & masking

Do not thin the mixed material by more than 5%, and only use Rust-Oleum 165 thinners specifically formulated for 9100. Use plastic electrical tape for masking — remove it within 24 hours or the coating will harden and make removal difficult.

8

Cure before filling

The pool must stand empty for a minimum of 5 days before filling and adding chemicals.

9

Temperature & water chemistry

Observe a maximum immersed temperature of 38 °C with the 9102 activator only, and application temperature of 13 °C. For non-heated pools, 9104 activator can be applied from 10 °C and above. Maintain pool water pH between 3 and 13 for all pools.

Important — do not apply over chlorinated rubber or acrylic.

Existing chlorinated rubber or acrylic coatings must be removed completely by abrasive or high-pressure water blasting. This is not negotiable if you want the 9100 system to bond and last.
