Noxyde · Asbestos Encapsulation

Don't replace your asbestos roof — encapsulate it

Encapsulating your asbestos roof with Noxyde can be a longer-term and less costly solution than replacing it with iron that is subject to corrosion.

Contact us first

Before you replace, have it inspected

If you have issues with your asbestos roof, then before replacing, let us arrange an exterior inspection with an approved asbestos consultant to determine whether the roof can be salvaged or not. To go ahead and replace the roof without checking first could be an unnecessary and very expensive exercise, compared to preparing the existing roof and encapsulating it with an elastomeric waterproofing wrap such as Noxyde.

Don't make a wrong and potentially costly decision — it could be the best investment you will make.

The product

Noxyde® — Proven Asbestos Encapsulation

Noxyde is the anti-corrosion waterproofing membrane used for asbestos encapsulation. It is applied directly to sound, prepared asbestos-cement roofing without the need for a primer, forming a seamless, flexible barrier that waterproofs and protects.

Proven in New Zealand for the last 30 plus years

  • Water-based, single component and odourless
  • 200% elongation — moves with the roof
  • Excellent UV tolerance — never becomes brittle
  • Corrosion-proof the fasteners and any metal penetrations
  • Useful in the New Zealand environment
  • Very safe and environmentally friendly
  • Applied by approved asbestos applicators

Why asbestos roofs last — and why they fail

Asbestos roofs have been around for over 70 years, and have lasted so long because they do not corrode in New Zealand's severe coastal environment. They do tend to deteriorate on the topside, due to atmospheric pollution, UV, and infestation of moss and lichen, which can break down the porous surface.

The underside of asbestos roofs, however, very rarely deteriorates — and swab and airflow tests in building cavities will in 99% of cases confirm this. That means the roof over your head is usually a candidate for encapsulation, not removal.

What Noxyde brings

  • Waterproof, with excellent UV tolerance — it will never become brittle
  • Stays a flexible membrane with 200% elongation, absorbing movement and thermal expansion
  • Corrosion-proofs the fasteners and any metal penetrations
  • Particularly useful in the New Zealand coastal environment
  • Single component, water-based and odourless — safe and environmentally friendly to apply
The process

How an asbestos roof is salvaged

01

Independent inspection

We arrange an exterior inspection with an approved asbestos consultant to determine whether the roof can be salvaged. Swab and airflow tests in building cavities confirm the underside condition — in 99% of cases it is sound.

02

Treat and prepare

Approved asbestos applicators treat the roof to remove moss and lichen, then attend to fasteners, visible cracks and any damage.

03

Encapsulate

Two thick coats of Noxyde membrane are spray applied, wrapping the roof in a seamless elastomeric waterproofing layer.

04

20–30 more years of life

The roof is rendered safe and watertight, with no corrosion risk of the kind an iron replacement would introduce. Applied to specification, Noxyde carries a conditional 10-year product performance guarantee.

Another 20–30 years, safely

Using this process, you can extend the life and render your asbestos roof safe for another 20–30 years, without having to worry about the corrosion that could occur with an iron roof replacement. Noxyde applied to specification comes with a conditional 10-year product performance guarantee, and roofs already coated with Noxyde have gone over 20 years in New Zealand without any further maintenance or problems.
